Hello,
Some of you already know my use case for Bosch XDK, The BeeInformed Project , we currently are validating our sensor network on some partners and we found a challenge, in outdoor sensing applications the data sending task to a cloud service demandas a intermediate component, the gateway to formward the data from sensors to cloud using cellular channel.

One of the amazing features of the XDK is the highly integration, we have sensors, battery, expansion and WIFI+BT combo, for indoor applications this is amazing but for outdoor appication such Agriculture here Brazil the replacement (or addiction) of WiFi by a 3G modem could deliver much value in these cases, so consider to add it in a future version of XDK.

Hello Felipe,

That would be a great idea, supporting many possible outdoor use cases. I can imagine that it would also be possible to integrate a 3G modem into an extension module specially designed for the XDK. But there are no official plans in that regard, yet.

Regarding your Beeinformed project, would LoRa be a possible solution to extend the range? If yes, then this article might interest you.

Kind regards,
Franjo

Hi Franjo, thanks (again :p ) for your help.

Regarding the beeinformed, of course, we are evaluating both LoRa and SigFox which is growing its coverage in Brazil. This SigFox extension in link is could be a great add-on to support long range data sending directly to cloud / gateway, our intention is to use a XDK as gateway also to forward data from Beehive XDKs to cloud service.

Just another question related with radio interfaces, the EM9301 currently has only the HCI + Link Layer of BLE, so it is possible to the BT Stack to behave as a master/scanner/client mode by just enabling these roles on GAP layer, as I already know the current build of BT stack only suport slave role only on GAP. So is there some plans to allow the master mode? (The intention is to use a XDK as a BLE gateway of a BLE piconet for example).

Thanks a lot :)

Hello Felipe,

I am always glad to help. Again, thanks for your hint.

Unfortunately, I have no further information about the BLE functionality.
Currently, only the most common peripheral mode is available. It is able to provide a sensor and bi-directional data exchange service that fits for most of the use cases.

I am really sorry but I can not make any suggestion, if there will be any change in the API in the future.

Nevertheless this topic remains on our improvement list and I will discuss it with the team again.

I hope that helps.

Kind regards,
Franjo
