It is actually the earth acceleration. If you put the XDK on the side you see the 1g on another axis. But you could calibrate the sensor so that it outputs 0 in normal condition. Here are the functions you need: SDK / xdk110 / Platform / SensorToolbox
I have no experience with calibration myself, so I just asked a colleague. A calibration is not required. If your application does not change the orientation of the XDK and you only want to measure the vibration, you can simply subtract the 527 in your implementation, or you can implement a high-pass filter that only filters out the permanent states.
